In 2021, its production reached 28.6 million tons, resulting in a considerable amount of &#8220;waste&#8221; being discarded. However, it is possible to create a fiber from its leaves, which would otherwise go unused.<\/p>\n<p>This fiber has been used since\u00a0 the 17th century in the Philippines and, given the large-scale\u00a0 production of\u00a0 pineapple, has the\u00a0 potential for\u00a0 more widespread use. It is a <strong>hard but light and soft material<\/strong>, <strong>biodegradable, with low density, high strength, and easy color retention<\/strong>. Additionally, it has a low cost and its production process requires little energy, as it relies on human labor.<\/p>\n<p><strong> The fiber can be used alone or blended with other\u00a0 materials<\/strong> and,\u00a0 depending\u00a0 on how it is\u00a0 processed, can have various applications, such as making faux leather, shoes, or embroidery, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0 European\u00a0 companies sell products made with pineapple\u00a0 fiber, but\u00a0 there is not yet a chain of extraction and processing of the leaves to obtain the fiber in Europe. Materials are imported from Asia, making it a less environmentally friendly practice. In Portugal, it is certainly a market to be explored, as this country produces around 1 million tons of pineapple in the Azores. T<strong>he production and use of this fiber not only benefit the environment but also local economies by creating jobs and adding value to agriculture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-64799 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/performancebyhm.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/LEITE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">M I L K\u00a0 \u00a0F I B E R<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 use of milk,\u00a0 specifically\u00a0 casein protein , for clothing\u00a0 production\u00a0 is\u00a0 not\u00a0 a\u00a0 recent innovation.\u00a0 This\u00a0 fiber\u00a0 was\u00a0 created\u00a0 in the\u00a0 1930s\u00a0 and\u00a0 was\u00a0 used\u00a0 to\u00a0 make\u00a0 a material\u00a0 extremely\u00a0 similar to wool.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 application\u00a0 of\u00a0 this\u00a0 material,\u00a0 besides\u00a0 utilizing dairy residues (which are not intended for human consumption),<strong> has the potential to be used for textiles in the biomedical field,<\/strong> as it i<strong>s a fiber with antibacterial properties<\/strong>. <strong>It is\u00a0 breathable, has good\u00a0 absorption, and is resistant to UV rays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Its\u00a0 drawbacks include\u00a0 that\u00a0 milk\u00a0 residues do\u00a0 not allow\u00a0 for large-scale\u00a0 production, it\u00a0 is\u00a0 more\u00a0 expensive, and the material is not as versatile as others available.
