The process of dyeing clothes is one of the most polluting in the textile industry; it requires a lot of water, energy, and toxic products. However, with the application of new methods and different products, this process can become more sustainable and less harmful. We emphasize that Performance’s dyeing partners all have water treatment plants, which not only take care of sanitation but also allow for reuse. We can affirm that the concern with reducing the ecological footprint is neither recent nor superficial, and we know that we can and must go further.
The attempt to replace chemical dyes with natural ones is a great way to do this – it avoids water and soil pollution, uses less energy, and does not involve toxic products. By using natural dyes, we obtain a biodegradable, non-toxic product with unique characteristics that confer originality and legitimacy (from a sustainability perspective) to the fabrics.
There are numerous plants and other natural materials that are viable for textile dyeing, and several national studies and projects can be found in this area. From algae and roots to nut shells and insects, there is no shortage of environmentally friendly alternatives for textile dyeing.
